Presence and Integrated Communications Working Group

About

The Presence and Integrated Communications Working Group (PIC-WG) fosters the deployment of network-based communication technologies through demonstrations, tutorials, and initiatives in collaboration with both the private sector and open-source initiatives. This growing area will have an effect on nearly every individual within higher education and also have the potential to be a significant driver for network design, security, and middleware. learn more...

    PIC-SER Campus Trials

The Internet2 Presence and Integrated Communications (PIC) Working Group is pleased to be supporting a set of campus trials of open standards-based (SIP/SIMPLE) integrated communications. Participating campuses will receive PIC-SER—a software package consisting of an open source, standards-based server (iptel.org's SIP Express Router), a presence agent module for the SIP Express Router, server installation and configuration scripts, documentation, and trial use of several commercial integrated communications clients for both PC and Mac platforms.

    Rich Presence Member Meeting Trials

The Internet2 Presence and Integrated Communications (PIC) Working Group is engaged in a series of first light trials, which take place at Internet2 meetings. The trials demonstrate SIP-based (Session Initiation Protocol) voice, video, instant messaging and voice conferencing services over an 802.11 wireless network in the context of rich presence derived from conference calendaring and HP labs location server. Trial participants download and install one of several integrated communications clients onto their laptops and PDAs allowing them to initiate communications to other participants using the receiver's email address as a single, converged electronic identity. By including rich presence services, participants are able to see not only whether other users are online or offline, but to also determine their locations and communication capabilities.
