PIC trialInstructions for the PIC.edu Demo

1a)  Create a Jabber account on the demo server  (This is a short term account for the demo, see "Using an existing Jabber account" below for generating a more permanent account)

  • Browse to https://picdemo.internet2.edu:9091/plugins/registration/sign-up.jsp
  • Select  "Provision a test Jabber account"; You will be asked for:
    • Your full name: (Optional; this is included in your profile on this server and may be seen in searches of this server's Jabber User Directory)
    • Preferred Jabber username: (this will be your account username)
    • Email address: (Optional; your home institution email address preferred; this may be seen in searches of this server's Jabber User Directory)
    • Password:  ( your choice, but please note that this is unsecure, so don't use passwords you use elsewhere)
  • Submit your information and recieve a success page stating  "New account successfully created."
  • Your identity is "Preferred Jabber username"@picdemo.internet2.edu  This is know as your Jabber ID (JID)
  • NOTE: Many IM clients (excluding iChat) will allow you to create an account directly within the client software, bypassing the need to create an account directly on the server.  Feel free to use this method if you are comfortable with it.
  • You may create more than one account (each with a unique username).
  • Accounts will be deleted after a year of inactivity.
1b)  Use an existing Jabber account
  • You may use any Jabber account to participate in the demo.  You may use an existing Jabber account (such as Google Talk or Live Journal) or you may wish to create a new account on an external server like jabber.org.  For more, see http://www.jabber.org/quickstart
  • You may wish to choose this option if you would like to use an account that will persist after the Internet2 Member Meeting.
  • Some institutions already provision their own accounts internally.  If you have a Jabber account from your home institution, feel free to use it.

2)  Choose a client

Here are several clients that we’ve had good experiences with, but there are many others for these and other operating systems including Linux, as well as platform independent Web Based clients.
Detailed instructions for configuring Pidgin, AdiumX, and iChat for the demo should be available at http://picdemo.internet2.edu

4)  Connect
Several persistent chatrooms, which correspond to the meeting rooms at the hotel, have been pre-configured for the track sessions and general sessions taking place at the Member Meeting. (Please note that side meetings are not included in this demo.) See the Member Meeting agenda for a schedule of activites per room. Then, connect to a chatroom when a meeting of your choice is in session.

If you are not attending the Member Meeting in person, you can watch the netcast sessions and still participate in the chatroom during those sessions. We even plan to take questions from the chatroom! All netcast sessions are currently scheduled in rooms Napolean B/C or Borgne.
